Beyond the classroom: How Sea Cadets are Transforming Life Chances in Medway

For the first time ever, National Cadets Week is being celebrated across the UK to provide families with an opportunity to discover the youth organisation and reconnect people with the armed forces.

To mark the occasion at Thinking Schools Academy Trust, we're proud to shine a light on how the cadet movement is empowering our young people in Medway to build confidence, resilience and teamwork.

Through our longstanding support of Medway Victory Sea Cadets - TS Temeraire, students from Holcombe Grammar School, Maritime Academy, The Victory Academy and local junior and primary schools benefit from access to the unit's enriching life experiences.

Sea Cadets offers young people the chance to challenge themselves, develop practical skills and work as part of a team within a supportive environment. From learning to sail, windsurf or powerboat, to taking part in adventurous training, or drumming with a marching band, cadets gain experience to help them build self-belief and responsibility.

Alongside adventure and exploration, Sea Cadets also learn valuable skills which stay with them for life, whilst also ensuring they remain active members of their communities.

Trevor Eaton LT(SCC) RNR, Commanding Officer of our Medway Victory Sea Cadets unit, reflected on the wider impact of Sea Cadets on students in our Trust.

"The success of TS Temeraire is testament to the strength of the partnership between the Thinking Schools Academy Trust, our dedicated volunteers, supportive families and committed young people.

"From modest beginnings in 2018, the unit has grown into a thriving organisation of more than 60 cadets. TS Temeraire cannot be measured purely by numbers as it provides young people with confidence, purpose, belonging and belief in their own potential.

"That impact will continue to grow, ensuring future generations of pupils benefit from opportunities to help them become confident individuals, successful learners and responsible citizens".

At Thinking Schools Academy Trust, our schools work tirelessly to provide extra-curricular opportunities just like Sea Cadets to transform the life chances of their students. This helps them realise their potential beyond the four walls of their school and see how they can become active citizens.

Medway Victory Sea Cadets is available to all students at Holcombe Grammar School, Maritime Academy and The Victory Academy, as well as Year 5 and Year 6 pupils in local schools. Families who are interested in learning more and how their child can get involved can find more information via their dedicated Facebook page.
