Curledge Street Academy welcomes MP Steve Darling to celebrate creativity and arts education

Curledge Street Academy in Paignton recently welcomed Steve Darling, MP for Torbay, for an inspiring visit showcasing the school’s ongoing journey towards achieving the prestigious Artsmark Award.

Accompanied by his guide dog, Jennie, Steve spent time engaging with pupils and staff, gaining insights into the school’s arts programme and its transformative impact on the wider school community. The Artsmark Award is a nationally recognised accreditation celebrating schools that prioritise arts and culture in their curriculum. Curledge Street Academy places creativity and the arts at the heart of its educational approach.

To celebrate the visit, pupils performed a heartfelt song for Steve and Jennie, a moment that perfectly demonstrated the Academy’s dedication to nurturing creativity and confidence through the arts.

Following the performance, Steve shared an uplifting message with the pupils, encouraging them to embrace challenges:

“The important thing is when you do something that feels scary, lean into it and say, ‘This is my opportunity to grow and become a better person.’ Your singing today was incredible, a part of your journey in building yourselves.”

A year 5 pupil reflected on the experience:

“I was a bit nervous. I loved singing for him and Jennie.”

Steve also met with staff to discuss the Artsmark application process, exploring how it aligns with the school’s long-term vision to embed the arts into its curriculum and culture.

Head of School, Hannah Wilkinson, highlighted the significance of the arts in the school’s mission, saying:

"The arts have a unique ability to reach our children in ways other academic subjects cannot, unlocking hidden talents and boosting confidence. We place a high value on creativity here because it has a profound impact on our pupils’ mental health, attendance, and overall development."

Curledge Street Academy looks forward to continuing its journey towards Artsmark accreditation, inspiring pupils and the wider school community through the power of the arts.
