Two school communities have bid a fond farewell to their Headteacher, Jess Humphrey, as she retires after more than 15 years of serving the families of Paignton.
Jess, who has led both Curledge Street Academy and Kings Ash Academy, was warmly celebrated by both schools in recognition of her inspiring career and leadership.
As proud members of the award-winning Thinking Schools Academy Trust, the two schools credit Jess as a passionate educator and leader, whose influence has shaped their growth and inspiring countless pupils and staff along the way.
Under her guidance, both schools have flourished, creating nurturing and ambitious learning environments where every child is encouraged to thrive.
Since joining in 2010, Jess quickly became a central figure in the school community. Her ability to recognise potential in both pupils and staff alike has built a legacy of ambition, resilience, and success.
Among her many achievements, Jess led the development of the Little Thinkers nurseries, which opened in October 2024. Creating a space where even the youngest learners; some as young as nine months can begin their journey in a fun, nurturing environment has been a truly special achievement.
To honour her remarkable contributions, both schools hosted heartfelt celebrations, bringing together past and present colleagues for an afternoon of warm tributes, shared memories, and joyous festivities. Guests enjoyed afternoon tea, quizzes, live music, and farewell gatherings filled with laughter and reflection.
As she prepares to step away from school life, Jess reflects on the incredible journey she has been on:
“It has been an absolute privilege to be part of these schools. The children, staff, and families have made every moment so rewarding, and I will always look back on my time here with the fondest memories.”
Jess also expressed heartfelt thanks to the school community, acknowledging the vital role they played in the schools' successes:
“Thank you to every parent and carer for your unwavering support and trust over the years. Working with our community has been a true privilege, helping make our school a place where every child feels valued and inspired to reach their full potential. Working together has been key in achieving our mission of transforming life chances.”
Rob Fitzsimmons, Head of Kings Ash Academy, said:
“Jess, your kindness, dedication, and belief in every child have shaped this school in ways words cannot really capture. You have always been there for everyone, creating a school community where people feel valued and supported.
"As you step into retirement, we’re all so grateful for the huge difference you’ve made. It is difficult to imagine the school without you, but if anyone has earned the time to relax, reflect, and enjoy life beyond work, it is you. Your legacy will continue to inspire us all.”
Hannah Wilkinson, Head of Curledge Street Academy, added:
"Working with Jess has been an absolute privilege. She has been more than just a leader; she has been a mentor, a cheerleader, and a friend to so many of us.
“Her warmth, encouragement, and belief in her team have created a truly special atmosphere in our schools. She lifts people up, inspires confidence, and always finds a way to bring out the best in everyone. We have shared so many laughs, challenges, and proud moments together, and while we will miss her hugely, we know her impact will stay with us for years to come."
