Implementing a new system: How Thinking Schools Academy Trust Used Internal Communications to Transform Culture

In a time when academies and trusts face growing demands for transparency, collaboration, and adaptability, Thinking Schools Academy Trust has made strategic internal communication the cornerstone of its culture and growth. By fostering an environment where voices are heard, and values are lived, TSAT has set a standard for how intentional, open communication can unify teams and empower students. Here's an exclusive look at their journey.

At TSAT, communication is more than just the exchange of information—it’s the foundation of a supportive, purpose-driven culture. To meet the needs of a rapidly growing Trust, Head of Marketing and Communications, Lauren Wilson, introduced a range of internal communication initiatives that not only keep staff informed but engaged and motivated to contribute to the trust’s mission to ‘Transform Life Chances.’

"We believe that everyone should feel connected to our goals and values. By ensuring transparency and frequent communication, we're not just sharing news; we're building trust and a sense of belonging for all." says Lauren Wilson.

By actively listening to staff needs and creating collaborative solutions, TSAT demonstrates how communication can lead to a tangible, positive culture that underpins a well thought out people strategy.

As the world of communications continues to evolve, the Thinking Schools Academy Trust will continue to look for solution focused ways to keep their communication strategies proactive and employee centred;

· TSAT Trust launched a dedicated intranet platform to make important information, updates, and resources more accessible to all staff.

· To continue strengthening the feedback culture, TSAT plans to hold regular feedback sessions to gather insights on staff experiences and ideas for improvement.

· Recognising that effective communication starts with leaders, TSA Trust will also offer communication training to school leaders to equip them with the tools to support their teams effectively.

"Our goal is to be proactive and strategic in how we communicate and engage our People, whilst remaining responsive to our staff voice” says Janina Villalta, Director of Strategic Delivery, “We understand that to deliver our People Strategy long term, communication has to be adaptable, valued and attuned to the evolving needs of our staff.”

TSAT’s commitment to communication as a cultural shift is not only a strategic choice but a value that aligns with its mission. The Trust has shown that by maintaining an open dialogue, encouraging feedback and prioritising staff wellbeing, they have created an environment where everyone thrives together. In September, the trust was shortlisted for the work around developing their people by Investors in people for UK Employer of the Year and the Award for Employee Engagement. These awards acknowledge the whole Trust’s work and the value we place on staff voice and demonstrates the power of effective communication.
