Teaching excellence celebrated as staff take top honours at Kent Education Awards

Teachers from across the Thinking Schools Academy Trust have been recognised for their exceptional contribution to education at this year’s Kent Education Awards, celebrating schools and staff across the South East region.

The awards, which highlight excellence, innovation and dedication within education, saw three teachers win their nominated categories.

Nell Young from Goodwin Academy in Deal won Support Staff Member of the Year for the Dover District, celebrating alongside colleagues from the school. Nell has worked tirelessly as the school’s Attendance Improvement Coordinator, supporting students to improve their attendance and engagement.

From Maritime Academy, Hafsa Khokhar received Early Career Teacher of the Year – Secondary for Medway, as well as being named the overall Early Career Teacher of the Year for Kent, an incredible achievement to receive at the start of her teaching career. Hafsa was unfortunately unable to attend the ceremony, so colleagues Sarah, Steph and Morgan proudly collected the award on her behalf.

Among the winners, John Still from Holcombe Grammar School was celebrated for his outstanding impact on students and the wider school community, having been named Secondary School Teacher of the Year for Medway and the overall Secondary School Teacher of the Year for Kent. As a passionate advocate for reading and inclusion, he has transformed the school’s library into a thriving, student-led space while driving a strong culture of reading for pleasure. His commitment to supporting students beyond the classroom and inspiring confidence, leadership and aspiration has earned widespread praise, with colleagues and families describing him as “a teacher in a million” and “one of a kind.”

Their success is a testament not only to their individual dedication, but also to the collaborative ethos within their schools. Each has been recognised for going above and beyond to create engaging, inclusive learning environments where every student can thrive.

Alongside the award winners, several teachers were also nominated for their outstanding contributions within their schools and the positive impact they have on their students.

Nominations serve as a powerful reminder that the efforts of staff are seen and valued by peers and the wider community. Leaders across the trust celebrated nominated staff with certificates to acknowledge their achievements, including All Faiths Children’s Academy, which highlighted the success of its Deaf Provision, Tree Tops, following multiple nominations from parents.
