In a thrilling celebration of science and discovery, Brixham College and Paignton Academy, recently joined forces to bring the ‘Wonderstruck’ science event to primary school children across the Torbay area.
Wonderstruck explores the history and science of rockets, tracing their development from the discovery of black powder to the cutting-edge advancements of space exploration and beyond.
The four-day event was split across both Brixham College and Paignton Academy welcomed over 500 Year 5 and 6 pupils from local primary schools. They experienced an unforgettable mix of explosive experiments, hands-on learning, and jaw-dropping demonstrations.
The show featured a working hybrid rocket motor, an enormous fireball, and some incredibly loud demonstrations that left audiences in wonder.
The excitement was not limited to pupils, Wonderstruck also welcomed the wider community, with evening sessions drawing in science enthusiasts of all ages.
Pupils from Furzeham Primary School, Kings Ash Academy, and Curledge Street Academy, also part of The Thinking Schools Academy Trust joined the event, immersing themselves in thrilling STEM activities.
One of the event’s highlights was a hands-on rocket-building workshop, where pupils constructed their own air-powered rockets. Using the same fundamental principles that launch astronauts into space, they harnessed the power of compressed air to send their creations soaring.
Year 5 pupils from Furzeham primary School were amazed by the experience.
Jasmine shared: “It was amazing! I enjoyed watching the explosions. I did not know that no one knew who invented the rocket.
Kirsty Hughes, Director of Science at Paignton Academy shared:
“As a STEM teacher, seeing young minds light up with excitement for science is incredibly rewarding.
“STEM is all about problem solving and critical thinking, and events like this inspire young minds to ask questions and explore the world around them.”
Jay Davenport, Regional Director at The Thinking Schools Academy Trust, reflected on the impact of the event:
“By working together, Brixham College and Paignton Academy have been able to give even more children the opportunity to experience the excitement of science and think deeply about their learning.
“Collaboration and advocacy are two of the core principles we have that thread across TSAT. Wonderstruck is evidence of both in action and we are proud that it was able to brings schools together and create such a positive impact.”
