TSAT Terriers triumph in Commando Challenge, raising money for literacy and mental health

Staff from the Thinking Schools Academy Trust (TSAT), known as the TSAT Terriers, have successfully completed the gruelling 12km Commando Series obstacle race at Hever Castle, smashing through mud, tunnels, and Royal Marines-style challenges - all in the name of literacy and mental wellbeing.

Led by Michelle Smith and Dan High, the team took on the challenge on Sunday 12th October with the goal of raising money to purchase reading resources across Thinking Schools Academy Trust and contribute to mental health charities in the communities their schools serve.

The team: Daniel Botting, Michelle Smith, Tracey Baillie, Simon Brown, Philip Carey, Dan High, and Andrew Kershaw, braved the demanding course with determination and camaraderie, turning grit into generosity.

Michelle Smith, one of the challenge leads, said the even was one of the “most challenging” but “rewarding” activities she has endured and is grateful for the support received [and continuing to be received] in donations.

She said: "We took on a 12km obstacle race that turned out to be closer to 15km - muddy, challenging, and a real test of teamwork. It was tough but such a great experience with an amazing team of colleagues.

“I'm so grateful to friends, family, and colleagues for their generous donations and encouragement along the way. We've raised more than £1,000 so far, which will go towards supporting literacy resources for our schools and mental health charities - thank you.”

Improving outcomes in literacy across our regions is a key focus of the work we do to Transform Life Chances.

Michelle continued: "Reading opens doors, not just to learning, but to confidence, imagination and achievement. When a child has access to the right books and the encouragement and support to read, they’re not just building skills for school, they’re building on their life chances for the future.

"At the same time, we know that good mental wellbeing underpins every success. Reading can be a mindful escape, a way to slow down, reflect, and find calm. By supporting this challenge, you’re helping us give children both the tools to achieve and the space to thrive.”

The funds raised will go directly toward enhancing literacy initiatives across TSAT schools and supporting mental health charities that make a difference.

While the mud may have washed off, the impact of the TSAT Terriers’ efforts will be felt for years to come. Donations are welcome here and at the link below.
